The Facts about Suicide


  • Every day around two people die from suicide in Scotland.

  • In Scotland, in 2007, there were 838 deaths that were confirmed as, or suspected to be suicides.

  • Almost three out of four suicides are by men.

  • Suicide is the biggest killer of young people in Scotland.

  • Around three out of four of suicides are completed by people who have not been in contact with mental health services in the year before death.

  • Based on three-year rolling averages there was a 13% fall in suicide rates between 2000-02 and 2005-07
