Drugs and Alcohol Today is the annual exhibition and seminar programme for Scottish substance misuse professionals.
This one-day event, comprising a full and comprehensive seminar programme and a large exhibition, provides a unique opportunity for professionals and managers involved in preventing and treating substance misuse, service users and those interested in joining the profession to come together to debate the big issues, share best practice and network.
The seminar programme runs throughout the day. No need to book, just pick and choose from a wide selection of topics, including:
Substance misuse and mental health Including inputs on mental health and cannabis, and specialist provider services.
- Family services
Examples of innovative education and support projects working with children and substance misusing parents.
- Korsakoff's syndrome
A look at the medical issues associated with alcohol-induced dementia and what is needed in terms of service provision.
- Criminal justice
Examples of different projects aimed at stopping the 'revolving door' faced by many people with substance misuse problems.
- Rural issues
Speakers will tackle issues such as commissioning rural services, confidentiality and public stigma, and working with GPs.
- Moving on
A session setting out current employment and housing options.
- Working with young people
Looking at some of the issues of particular relevance to young people, including binge drinking and cocaine.
- Health promotion
A session looking at what techniques and practices work to promote health.
- New approaches to treatment
A look at the pros and cons of brief interventions, community rehab, self-management recovery via internet support (SMART) and more.
Plus a keynote address, providing an update on current policy for alcohol and drugs in Scotland.
The exhibition
Visitors are invited to network from representatives from 40 organisations from across the statutory and independent sectors. Attending Drugs and Alcohol Today Scotland will enable you to gain advice and knowledge from key organisations and collect masses of informative literature.
The zones
One of the most popular features at the exhibitions is the 'zones' which offer visitors a vast array of free activities, helpful advice, and fun events
This year the zones include:
- The training and development zone,
offering delegates one-to-one advice and information on career development and education and training opportunities.
- The Careers Surgery,
where the City & Guilds team will provide one-to-one sessions to advise you about qualifications in the sector.
- The Arts Zone,
featuring an array of dazzling and inspired visual artwork and other crafts by service users, illustrating the way creative practices can help to encourage confidence, inspiration and motivation
- The Drugs Awareness Zone,
illustrating the different drugs available today, what they look like and their long and short term effects.
- The Online Services Zone,
demonstrating how service users can access services online or over the phone
- The Complementary Therapy Zone,
providing a relaxing massage, aromatherapy, aura healing and a chance to get away from the crowds.
