The Choose Life national forum

2010 presentations

Hosted in Aberdeen, the theme was ‘Connecting to assist widening and ultimately strengthening the net', building on the conclusions from the 2009 event that 'widening the net' would be a useful approach.

The event provided an excellent forum to meet, share knowledge and practice with local area coordinators, national partners and stakeholders. Delegates were also able to review progress over the last year on the achievements of Choose Life, and discuss future developments and challenges. While suicide rates in Scotland have declined by 10% since the launch of Choose Life in 2002, those in the most deprived areas of Scotland have a suicide risk double that of the Scottish average and young men continue to be at greater risk.

2009 presentations

Choose Life 2009 annual forum brought together Choose Life Coordinators, national partners and stakeholders to share activities and experiences over the last year, and review national and local progress.

The most deprived areas in Scotland have a suicide risk double that of the Scottish average and young men continue to be at greater risk. Following 2008’S summit, Choose Life looked to further explore aspects of inequalites which may lead to suicide and discuss the ways in which they can be tackled.

2008 presentations

Choose Life Coordinators and other key people tasked with reducing Scotland's suicide rate came together in Dundee.

The event was judged to be a huge success, with 63% of delegates rating it as excellent.  In addition to the key presentations the 2008 forum saw the inclusion of eight well-received workshops ranging from suicide prevention training to the internet and suicide risk. Many people also praised the speeches.

2007 presentations

The two-day event, held in Edinburgh, brought together Choose Life Coordinators from around the country and key people tasked with reducing Scotland’s suicide rate. It was opened by Lewis Macdonald, Deputy Minister for Health and Community Care.

The event was judged to be a huge success, 93% of delegates rating the event as either good or excellent.  Many people also praised the informative and inspiring speeches.

2006 presentations

Choose Life Coordinators were joined by suicide prevention trainers, local and national partners to share experience and knowledge of the groundbreaking work being carried out throughout Scotland.

The two-day event included presentations on aspects of Choose Life and on partner activities, and generated much discussion around the key challenges ahead. Theatre Nemo entertained everyone with their 'huge bag of worries' whilst media volunteer Jay Brownlee shared her personal experience of suicide with the group.

A marketplace session proved an ideal opportunity for delegates to share experience, and learn from others to face the challenges ahead.
