Angus and Dundee City Council jointly employ a Mental Health and Wellbeing Co-ordinator to implement the national Choose Life Strategy at a local level. The post is hosted by Angus Council but works with the Lead Officer for Suicide Prevention in both areas, raising the awareness of suicide prevention and working towards embedding the strategy and messages into mainstream provision. A joint Angus and Dundee Choose Life Steering Group currently meets every two months.
In terms of suicide prevention training, we work in partnership with Dundee University and NHS Tayside to deliver ASSIST, safeTALK and SIPP (suicide intervention and prevention programme) training to students, staff and the community of Angus and Dundee. At the moment the following specific project received Choose Life Funding in Angus:
SAMH - Community Support Network
Supporting a person who has thoughts of suicide and who may have attempted suicide can be very stressful. It can also be very worrying and scary. You might ask yourself what is suicide? Why does the person you care avout want to die?
SAMH is establishing Community Support Networks across Angus to support people who find themselves caring for someone who has suicidal thoughts. Through these networks SAMH will seek to provide information and guidance whilst bringing people together to share experiences and gain support.
The sessions will give you the chance to explore your personal situation in a safe environemnt and seek support from others who have a shared similar experiences. They will also seek to raise your confidence and capacity to keep caring for a perosn who is thinking about suicide.
