Taking ACTion

Following high profile coverage linking teenage suicides and the internet, PAPYRUS, a voluntary organisation who are committed to the prevention of young suicide, has developed a guide to online safety.

The guide offers basic advice and sources of help for any parent, grandparent or carer who wishes their child to take a safe and responsible approach to the cyber world and/ or may have concerns that a young person is depressed or suicidal.

To further support this action PAPYRUS has added a petition on the Downing Street Website concerning suicide websites, gathering 400 signatures in total.

The leaflet, entitled 'ACTion for safety on the internet', encourages people to 'act' in three ways:

  • Be Aware of the dangers of the internet as well as its advantages

  • Do Communicate from the earliest age about sensible use of the computer
  • Do Take precautions to ensure you have the appropriate firewall, filters and monitoring software.

For more information, visit the PAPYRUS website (www.papyrus-uk.org/) or download a PDF copy of the leaflet from the downloads table below.
