Choose Life - A national strategy and action plan to prevent suicide in Scotland

Every day, around two people die from suicide in Scotland

In 2002, the Scottish Government launched Choose Life, a ten year strategy and action plan to prevent suicide in Scotland.

Choose Life sets out a framework to ensure that action is taken nationally and locally to build skills, develop training, encourage people to seek help early, improve knowledge and awareness of 'what works' to prevent suicide, and to encourage partnership working and improved co-ordination between services.

Suicide prevention is everyone's business

Don't hide it. Talk about it.

'Don't hide it. Talk about it.' Hampden 2008

Choose Life marked the start of Suicide Prevention Week 2008 by launching the national 'Don't hide it. Talk about it' campaign. The integrated communications campaign formed a vital part of the strategy's implementation by raising awareness of suicide and and how it can be prevented among the general public. It included poster, press and radio advertising as well as online advertising to direct people to the new public-facing website www.suicide-prevention.co.uk. A variety of local activities also took place which amplified the key messages of the national campaign and reflected the theme of 2008 World Suicide Prevention Day to 'Think Globally, Plan Nationally, Act Locally'.
