Training for Trainers (T4T)

About Training for Trainers


Choose Life NHS Health Scotland will be funding T4Ts throughout 2010/11 for Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), Suicide Alertness for Everyone (safeTALK), and Skills Based Training on Risk Management (STORM).

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training for Trainers

ASIST Training for Trainers (T4T) is a five day practice orientated residential course that teaches participants to deliver (in pairs) two-day Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST). A challenging and intensive course, the T4T teaches participants the content of ASIST and the skills needed to deliver workshops. ASIST T4T is appropriate for candidates who have experience of supporting people at risk of suicide.

There will be one ASIST T4T scheduled for 2010/11.

  • 26 - 30th April  (Stirling). The closing date is 15th March.

Suicide Alertness for Everyone Training for Trainers

safeTALK Training for Trainers prepares partcicpants to deliver half day Suicide Alertness for Everyone (safeTALK). The T4T consists of pre-session work, a one-day (9 hour), onsite orientation provided by one safeTALK instructor. There is a focus on a positive learning environment, encouragement of open and honest talk, respect for differences and support of each other and active participation. 

There are a two safeTALK T4Ts planned for 2010/11:

  • 19th May (Glasgow). The closing date is 7th April.
  • 31st August(Edinburgh). The closing date is 20th July.

The success of an ASIST and safeTALK trainer is greatly enhanced by a combination of skills and characteristics such as:

  • available with dedicated time to deliver training
  • flexible attitude about suicide,
  • good interpersonal communication and helping skills,
  • suicide intervention skills,
  • knowledge about suicide,
  • established teaching and group leadership skills.

Skills Based Training on Risk Management Training for Trainers

STORM Training for Trainers is a 4 day course where participants spend time familiarizing themselves with the content of all the Suicide Prevention modules and methods of STORM. Each facilitator will practice presenting and facilitating a module either on their own or co facilitating with another facilitator. Attention will be given to 'Feedback skills' and providing a safe environment.

The following list is an indication of the desirable experiences to look for when selecting someone for STORM T4T:

  • Available with dedicated time to deliver training
  • Experience in Mental Health (However, experience in other areas can bring a different perspective to training. Two STORM Facilitators from different professional areas, one of whom has Mental Health experience, have co-facilitated training successfully)
  • Experience facilitating small groups
  • Experience facilitating role-rehearsal
  • Experience training
  • Recognised and acknowledged as credible practitioner
  • Good organizational skills

There are a number of STORM T4Ts planned for2010/11:

  • 24 - 27th May (Glasgow). The closing date is 12th April.
  • 14 - 17th June (Edinburgh). The closing date is 3rd May.
  • 23 - 26th August (Stirling). The closing date is 12th July.
