  • Can you tell me why there are so many deaths in the UK?

There is no simple explanation for this. A wide range of factors contribute including individual factors, societal and cultural influences, and quality of services. International evidence indicates that achieving a sustained reduction in suicides requires co-ordinated action over a number of years. This is why we have a long term strategy: Choose Life is working to reduce the number of suicides by 20% over 10 years. It is doing this through national and local activity, details of which are provided on our website. You might also want to look at the strategy itself which is also posted on our website. Suicide affects people from all walks of life, and we are keen to get across the message that people who are thinking about suicide should seek help. We are keen to stress that everyone has a part to play in suicide prevention: if people have concerns that someone they know is feeling suicidal, they should ask them - this could save their life. In the past two years, the suicide rates in Scotland have been lower than any time in the past 10 years. We hope that by 2013 we will see further falls and reach our target of a 20% reduction.
